Witnessing Whiteness
Orientation Meeting on Tuesday, September 20, 6 – 8:30 pm
Regular meetings begin Tuesday, October 4, 6 – 8:30 pm
& continue on the 1st & 3rd Tuesdays each month through May, 2017
This fall we begin the second presentation of the workshop series Witnessing Whiteness: The Need to Talk About Race and How to Do It. We will read and discuss the book, and participate in twice-monthly discussions and experiential exercises. This material will challenge us to examine our own thoughts & behaviors in the context of what it means to be white.
The goals of the workshop series are to:
- Build a community with a shared understanding of privilege, whiteness, and racism;
- Increase the group’s ability to support and implement diversity and racial justice initiatives; and
- Develop leadership capacity around issues of diversity and race.
These materials are specifically designed for white people to do with white people, to explore how white racism continues to exist despite our best beliefs that we are not and would never want to be racist.
We understand that unforeseen situations may prevent perfect attendance, but it is extremely important that you be committed to attending the vast majority of these sessions, as building unity and trust in the group is an important component of the workshops.
Purchase your own copy of the book, or borrow one from the church.
